Disaster Preparation
Preparing Emergency Supplies
Be sure to put these items in an emergency bag ahead of time!!
Priority Items
- Valuables (bank book, inkan seal, insurance card, etc.)
- Portable radio (check battery ahead of time)
- Flashlight (check battery ahead of time and prepare extra batteries)
- Clothes
- Emergency food
- Emergency medicine (make sure to take any current medications with you)
Secondary Items
- Food (rice, canned or packaged foods, snacks)
- Water (around 3 liters per person per day)
- Fuel (hotplate, etc.)
Fire
- Do not leave frying foods unattended.
- Do not smoke in bed, and do not toss cigarettes aside.
- Do not light a campfire or bonfire under strong winds.
- Do not let children play with matches or lighters.
- Use electronics properly and do not put too many plugs into one extension cord.
- Keep easily flammable objects away from heaters.
- Check all flame sources before going to bed.
- Be completely prepared to extinguish flames (prepare fire extinguishers, etc. in advance)
Wind and Flooding
(1) Indoors
- Prepare flashlight and radio in case of power outage.
- Listen carefully to typhoon information.
- Prepare drinking water in case water supply is cut off.
- Close window shutters and put tape on window glass in advance to prevent glass from scattering in case window is broken. Close curtains and blinds in advance to prepare against flying objects.
- Prepare emergency supplies for evacuation.
- Be careful when going outside.
- In places in danger of flooding, move daily necessities to a high location.
- Help infants, sick people and disabled people get to a safe location.
(2) Outdoors
- Install supports for garden shrubs and trees and reinforce fencing.
- Clean out gutters and drains to improve water drainage.
- Reinforce television antennas.
- Anchor down garbage cans and other items to prevent them from blowing away.
(3) Roofing
- Check for cracks, gaps or slipping of roof tiles.
- Check for warping or slipping of metal roofing.
(4) Window Glass
- Check for cracks and check if window frame is wobbly. Also, protect against flying objects caused by strong winds from outside by installing boards and other measures.
(5) Gutters and Shutters
- Check if gutters are clogged up by leaves and sediment.
- Check for separation or corrosion of joints.
- Check if shutters are wobbly or loose.
Earthquake
- Know the condition of the ground your house is on.
- Know the condition of the building.
- Create a plan to prevent furniture from falling over.
- Ensure the safety of flammable items and propane gas burners.
- Create an environment that will not cause a fire.
